The Blue Jays Signed Curtis Granderson, and I Still Can’t Decide How I Feel About It

After trading for IF Yangervis Solatre a couple weeks ago, the Jays finally dip there toes into the free agent market, signing veteran OF Curtis Granderson to a one-year deal.

Now look, in today’s baseball world of no salary cap, and multi-year contracts being handed out to bullpen guys like they’re the audience of an Ellen Christmas special, I can live with $5M for Grandy. At 36 is he a shell of his once all-star form? 100%. But I think in the right platoon situation with Steve Pearce, and a healthy campaign, Granderson can still give you 20+ home runs and a decent LF. Not to mention the great reputation Granderson has as a clubhouse guy.

Having said that, do I really like the Jays signing a 36-year-old to play outfield? ESPECIALLY when we’ve seen the Yankees and Red Sox prime themselves to do damage in 2018. The Jays seem to be somewhere in “the middle” right now, and in sports, that’s no bueno. They aren’t a major contender, but they also aren’t a basement dweller, so bringing in an older player into an already old, middle-of-the-pack team, might not make sense. “Garage sale buying” might be a bit over the top, but it’s a fair point with how little activity there is on the free agent market. And even though I’m fine with 5 million, it may end up being a big overpay, similar to what we saw last year when Toronto jumped the gun on Kendrys Morales (uuuuuuuuggghhhhhhhh).

Oh, and for those of you who are asking about why the Jays just didn’t re-sign Jose Bautista if they were going to sign a similar type player, I really have no answer. My best guess may be that Mark Shapiro wants to shake things up. Granderson is also a better player analytically, and we all know how that whole thing is swiffering baseball.

Granderson may not be Lorenzo Cain, JD Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Jake Arrieta, Alex Cobb, Lance Lynn, Gregg Holland, or Carlos Gonzalez (Who are all still available free agents by the way), but I guess it’s ok, right?

All-in-all, I guess I’ll decide how i feel about this in July, and you should too.
