Athletes in today’s world know how to build a fan base. Aside from performance on their respective playing fields, the side of fries with that – captivates our passion for these individuals to a whole nother degree. Odell “dougies” in the endzone, Harden stirs the pot after a deep three and Lukaku jumps into the crowd to celebrate with the fans… the list goes on. The skill on the field will always steal a fanatic’s heart, although, the actions away from the game in today’s generation are where the real hype is going. From suits that only the boldest could pull off to the fastest supercars in the hemisphere. The greatest on the playing fields can flex off of them just as icy.
This zodiac on the Chinese calendar in 2017 highlighted the year of the Rooster. If fashion had its own ritual for annual zodiacs such as the Chinese, 2017 would have been the year of the athlete. Some of the most audacious trends were rocked this year but were always able to be toned down with a classic box logo hoodie or two. Following is a list of the athletes across all realms of sport who have stunted the most exceptional style.
Lewis Hamilton (F1 Racing)
Mercedes-Benz prized possession has been winning Cups for the constructor for just over 10 years now. Hamilton debuted as a new hope for the team back in the 2007 Australian Grand Prix. After landing on the podium after his first race in Formula 1, the future was bright for the young Englishman. A 59-time winner on Sunday mornings has allowed Lewis to trot his way into 3 major championship seasons (2008, 2014, 2015). When he’s not passing on the track he’s flying by the rest of the driver’s with his exceptional street style and private jet. Lewis is seen below in two fire outfits that are followed by his luxurious plane. In the first two contrasting portraits, Lewis was spotted hopping out his Mercedes Maybach flexing a “Vetements” cap and a Gucci denim jacket. Outfit #2 shows the Brit squeezing into the extremely exclusive “Pharrell Human Race NMD Family&Friends” that were only given to icon Pharrell Williams’ closest family and friends, hence the name of the sneakers. Rounding out the rich athlete’s entity is his private jet that cost a reported US $20M after the glossy red paint job was added. Lewis, I salute you.
Roger Federer (WTA)
The Swiss born maestro has been gracing the world’s tennis stage after turning pro in 1998. Analytics and success consider him to have passed great’s such as Graf, Sampras, and Borg for the #1 spot all time. Roger has absolutely smashed records being an 8-time Wimbledon, 5-time Aussie Open, and 5-time US Open Champion. When Federer is not being the Ace Mamba on the clay he loves rocking simple fits with an outrageous kick game. After being featured on the cover of GQ’s “Style Bible”, he teed it up with Complex’s Joe La Puma for a cool episode of Sneaker Shopping. Bow Down to the Federer Express.

Conor McGregor (UFC)
The Notorious, one of the biggest names not only in sport but in the world. Conor McGregor is creating a name for himself that will undoubtedly go down in history. The definition of a “Mogul” is an important or powerful individual – Conor is this and then some. The UFC double champ has no reason not to flex in the hottest fashion and cars, what else would a smart Irishman do with his money? He knows how to create not only a crowd but a following, a huge fan base that aspires to be rolling in money like him one day. His spunk, swag and big talk have got him to where he is today and boy can he walk the talk. After arguably the biggest event in sports history (The Mayweather/McGregor bout) Conor walked out with close to $300M. The Notorious is usually rocking his sponsored Reebok gear, but man oh man when he’s not in the ring… draped in Gucci and all the finest. His garage is almost something out of a GTA video game. Supercars galore; private helicopters and a personal driver for his Rolls Royce. I’ll let the pictures below speak for themselves. Good on you mate.
Neymar Jr. (Soccer)
It is finally official, Neymar is no longer a member of FC Barcelona but instead decided to take his talents to Paris Saint-Germain. The record-shattering deal has now made Neymar the highest paid athlete in the world. After the conversion of the 263M Euro salary, in relation to all the additional sponsors, Neymar cashed in at whopping USD $350M over the 5-year contract. He surpassed the previous highest paying transfer, which was Paul Pogba’s move to Manchester United. After being part one of the best teams in La Liga history alongside superstars Messi and Suarez, Neymar has no problem with being the main man in a new country as a stepping stone to his bright future. When you sign a whopping deal like this you would be silly not to treat yourself a little. He also does not have a worry to drop $19,000 on kicks in another installment of Complex’s Sneaker Shopping (seen below). The moment the Brazilian began to light it up in the world of soccer, Nike snatched him up on a max deal. He has been a spokesperson, model, and collaborator on multiple occasions. Sneakers and soccer spikes just scratch the surface amongst the Nike and Jordan world that Neymar has been a part of. The 5-star FIFA skiller has also been knee deep with hypebeasts in recent news. Supreme reached out to the winger and handed him one of the first pairs of the Gold colourway in their Uptempo Collab with Nike (middle). Congratulations Neymar, Yeezy taught you well.

Russell Westbrook (NBA)
The Reigning MVP, Beastbrook, The Brodie is the man of this article. Russell Westbrook is an incredible individual who possesses just as much skill off the court as he does on. The point guard breaks barriers in the industry with his style of play and just his plain style. His fashion game is comparable to his hunger for triple doubles. At the end of July Russ Was crowned the “King” on Sport’s Illustrated Fashionable 50 List. Before almost every NBA game, the broadcast team records the players walking into the dressing room. Every fan or viewer knows when OKC plays that Westbrook has the extra flames. If you think Russ turns heads with his game at Chesapeake Energy Arena, you should see the head-turners when he’s walking down Rodeo Drive. Westbrook’s runner up, Victor Cruz, was asked his opinion on Russ’ style. His words sum it up to perfection: “For him, it’s just: Why can’t I wear that? Why should I be pigeonholed into one thing? Why can’t I average a triple double throughout the entire season? There’s nothing that he feels like he can’t do, and that just embodies his entire persona. And it makes for great fashion”. Like Westbrook says… Why Not?
